Owl’s Nest Opera was founded to promote the work of Australian artists and composers, in particular Peggy Glanville-Hicks, on the world stage.

ONO’s first undertaking was the world premiere recording of Glanville-Hicks’ opera Sappho (1963). The recording took place in Portugal in 2012 with the Gulbenkian Orchestra and Chorus, and an international cast headed by KS Deborah Polaski and Sir John Tomlinson. The Sappho CD was released internationally on the Toccata Classics label and is currently available for online purchase in Australia, the UK, USA and Europe.

Behind the scenes work on Sappho has continued since the CD release – recruiting a global team of the highest calibre to bring the opera to the stage. The aim is for Owl’s Nest Opera to initiate an international co-production with an Antipodean cast premiering Sappho in Australia before an international cast presents the work at opera houses and festivals overseas.
